Commissions & Freelance – Articulated Scrap Material Wings

Made for Access All Areas’ Black Cab theatre production of Winged – a re-telling of the Icarus story. Directed by Helen Bryer and designed by Lisa Ducie.

Concept was a set of wings with a full span of 3m which could open and stay open with a single central easy pull mechanism. To look as though a young artist had made them from recycled plastic and scrap materials.

Wing segments were a latticework of clear and opaque twin wall with collected plastic recycling ironed flat and sandwiched between, then coloured to a stained glass effect using FEV.

I developed a mechanism involving pulleys and washing line through aluminium tubing, tensioned with bungee chords and attached to a custom-made harness. Central pull mechanism ran through sailing cleats.
