Articulated recycling wings

Made for Access All Areas’ Black Cab theatre production of Winged - a re-telling of the Icarus story. Directed by Helen Bryer and designed by Lisa Ducie.

Concept was a set of wings with a full span of 3m that could open and stay open with a single central pull mechanism. To look as though a young artist had made them from recycled plastic and scrap materials.

Wing segments were a latticework of clear and opaque twin wall with collected plastic recycling ironed flat and sandwiched between, then coloured to a stained glass effect using FEV. Mechanism involved washing line through aluminium tubing and pulleys, tensioned with bungee and attached to custom-made harness. Central pull mechanism ran through sailing cleats.
